Interview: Kate Siegel on Legacy, Family, and Finding Light in the ‘The Life of Chuck’ [VIDEO]

Kate Siegel is no stranger to the world of Mike Flanagan. A frequent collaborator and his real-life wife, Siegel has starred in several of Flanagan’s projects, including The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher. But in The Life of Chuck, based on a short story by Stephen King, audiences are treated to a much softer, more tender performance from Siegel.

In the film, Siegel plays the teacher of a young Chuck Krantz and delivers a moving monologue that borrows from the poetry of Walt Whitman, including the line, “You contain multitudes.”

Siegel revealed that many scenes stayed with her long after filming wrapped. “There is a moment at the end of Act Two where Nick Offerman concludes his monologue about that’s why God made the world. Then there’s a silence, then there’s a giggle. And that giggle is my son,” she shared. “Because, Cody, my youngest boy, plays youngest Chuck,” she shared.

This marked a notable shift in tone for Siegel, whose recent turn as Camille in The Fall of the House of Usher was sharp, biting, and emotionally complex. Here, her character exudes warmth and grace, something Siegel described as “so enjoyable.” “It was so enjoyable to shoot, it was like a party,” she recalled.

Reflecting on the atmosphere on set, Siegel added: “There was something about this where everyone was bringing everything they had every day, and that’s not always the case,” she said. “Everyone felt like they were making something they wanted their children to see, that their legacy was a part of, that the world needed right now.”

NEON will release The Life of Chuck in theaters on June 6.
